A birth story about a woodpecker who shares food from an acacia wood with his friend Kandagalaka, who grows proud and, ignoring warnings, pecks at a trunk on his own until he breaks his beak and dies, told in reference to Devadatta’s self-destructive attempts to imitate the Buddha.
