아카시아 숲에서 친구 칸다갈라카와 먹이를 나누던 딱따구리에 관한 자타카로, 그 친구는 자만심에 차 경고를 무시한 채 홀로 나무 둥치를 쪼다가 부리가 부러져 죽고 만다는 이야기이며, 데바닷타가 부처님을 흉내 내려다 자멸한 시도들과 관련해 설해졌다.

A birth story about a woodpecker who shares food from an acacia wood with his friend Kandagalaka, who grows proud and, ignoring warnings, pecks at a trunk on his own until he breaks his beak and dies, told in reference to Devadatta’s self-destructive attempts to imitate the Buddha.
