වනයේ රහත් බව ලැබූ, භාවනාවේ ගිලී සිටියදී ගසක බෙල්ලක් යැයි වරදවා තේරුම් ගත් හොරු පිරිසක් තම කොල්ල මුඩුව ඔහු මතට ගොඩගැසූ, ඒ නිසා ඛාණු (‘බෙල්ල’) නම ලැබූ ස්ථවිරයෙකි.

A thera who attained Arahantship in the forest and, while absorbed in meditation, was mistaken for a tree stump by a gang of thieves who piled their loot on him, earning him the name Khāṇu (‘stump’).
