A birth-story about a poor man who offered a humble bran-cake to a tree spirit out of devotion, ashamed beside others’ lavish gifts, and who was rewarded when the spirit revealed a buried treasure that won him the post of royal treasurer, echoing a similar act of generosity by a poor man toward the Buddha.
