かつて裸形の苦行者として苦行の価値を試すため極端な苦行に耐えたボーディサッタ（Bodhisatta）が、死の床で自己苦行が無益であると悟ったというジャータカで、仏陀の道は苦を終わらせないという元比丘スナッカッタ（Sunakkhatta）の主張への反論として説かれた。

A Jātaka in which the Bodhisatta, once a naked ascetic who endured extreme austerities to test their worth, recognizes on his deathbed that self-mortification is futile, told in response to the former monk Sunakkhatta’s claim that the Buddha’s path does not end suffering.
