한때 나체 고행자로서 그 가치를 시험하려 극단적인 고행을 견뎌낸 보살(Bodhisatta)이 임종의 자리에서 자기 고행이 무익함을 깨달았다는 자타카로, 붓다의 길이 괴로움을 끝내지 못한다는 전직 비구 수낙캇타(Sunakkhatta)의 주장에 대한 응답으로 설해졌다.

A Jātaka in which the Bodhisatta, once a naked ascetic who endured extreme austerities to test their worth, recognizes on his deathbed that self-mortification is futile, told in response to the former monk Sunakkhatta’s claim that the Buddha’s path does not end suffering.
