一則本生故事，講菩薩曾為一名裸形苦行者，以種種極端苦行考驗其效驗，臨終方悟自苦並無用處，此事因還俗僧欲那伽多誹謗佛陀之道不能滅苦而被提起。

A Jātaka in which the Bodhisatta, once a naked ascetic who endured extreme austerities to test their worth, recognizes on his deathbed that self-mortification is futile, told in response to the former monk Sunakkhatta’s claim that the Buddha’s path does not end suffering.
