《중부》 제50경으로, 몸속에 들어온 마라 때문에 괴로워하던 마하목건련이 당황한 유혹자와 맞서, 자신도 한때 마라였을 때 과거불과 그 제자들을 박해하도록 부추겼다가 그 결과 지옥에서 끔찍한 고통을 겪었다고 이야기하며, 지금의 마라에게도 같은 운명을 경고한다는 경이다.

The fiftieth discourse of the Majjhimanikāya, in which Mahā-Moggallāna, troubled by Māra who has entered his body, confronts the discomfited tempter and recounts how he himself was once a Māra who provoked persecution against an earlier Buddha and his disciples, suffering terrible torment in hell as a result, warning the present Māra of the same fate.
