부처님의 가장 저명한 제자 중 한 명으로, 부처님이 간략히 설한 것을 상세히 풀어 설명하는 데 으뜸이라 칭송받았으며, 웃제니에서 왕실 사제의 아들로 태어나 후에 아반티 전역에 불교를 확립한 것으로 유명하다.
