仏陀より年長の高名な弟子で、比丘同士に訓戒を与える者の中で第一と称えられた。辺境の国クックタヴァティーの王であったとき、商人たちから仏陀がこの世に出現したことを知らされて改宗した。

An eminent disciple of the Buddha, older than him in age, declared foremost among those who instructed fellow monks, who as king of the frontier realm of Kukkuṭavatī was converted after merchants told him of the Buddha’s appearance in the world.
