부처님보다 나이가 많은 저명한 제자로, 동료 비구들을 교계하는 이들 중 제일로 일컬어졌다. 변방 왕국 꾹꾸따와띠의 왕이었을 때 상인들이 부처님이 세상에 출현했음을 알려준 후 귀의하였다.

An eminent disciple of the Buddha, older than him in age, declared foremost among those who instructed fellow monks, who as king of the frontier realm of Kukkuṭavatī was converted after merchants told him of the Buddha’s appearance in the world.
