한때 부유한 바라문이었다가 숲의 고행자가 된 이가 무엇이 진정한 길조인가라는 전국적 논쟁에 참된 축복에 관한 게송들로 답한다는 본생담으로, 부처가 같은 질문에 답하도록 요청받아 『마하망갈라경』을 설했을 때 함께 설해졌다.
