仏陀と裸形の苦行者カッサパとの対話である『長部』第八経で、仏陀は自己苦行が精神的発達の障害であり、心を真に制御することよりもはるかに要求が少ないと論じる。カッサパは出家し阿羅漢となった。

The eighth sutta of the Dīghanikāya, a dialogue between the Buddha and the naked ascetic Kassapa in which the Buddha argues that self-mortification is a hindrance to spiritual development, far less demanding than true mastery over the mind; Kassapa entered the Order and became an Arahant.
