붓다와 나체 고행자 깟사빠 사이의 대화인 디가니까야 여덟 번째 경으로, 붓다는 고행이 영적 발전에 장애가 되며 마음을 진정으로 다스리는 것보다 훨씬 덜 힘든 것이라고 논한다. 깟사빠는 출가하여 아라한이 되었다.

The eighth sutta of the Dīghanikāya, a dialogue between the Buddha and the naked ascetic Kassapa in which the Buddha argues that self-mortification is a hindrance to spiritual development, far less demanding than true mastery over the mind; Kassapa entered the Order and became an Arahant.
