마가다의 바라문 마을로, 장로 마하깟사빠의 출생지

A brahmin village in Magadha, the birthplace of the elder Mahā-Kassapa.

후에 마하메가와나로 알려지게 된 곳에 까꾸산다 부처님 시대에 붙여진 이름으로, 당시 아바야 왕이 그 땅을 부처님께 헌납하였다

The name given to the site later known as Mahāmeghavana during the time of the Buddha Kakusandha, when it was presented to him by King Abhaya.

스리랑카 서해안의 상륙지로, 남인도와의 왕래를 위한 중요한 항구였으며, 왕실의 신부들과 침략군, 원정군 모두 이곳에 상륙하였다
