तृतीय बौद्ध संगीति के अध्यक्ष थेर, जिनका जन्म पाटलिपुत्र में हुआ और जिन्हें युवावस्था में भिक्षु सिग्गव ने वर्षों की मौन दृढ़ता के बाद संघ में लाया, और आगे चलकर सिग्गव तथा चण्डवज्जी दोनों के अधीन गहन अध्ययन किया।

The presiding elder of the Third Buddhist Council, born at Pāṭaliputta and won over to the Order as a youth by the monk Siggava after years of quiet perseverance, going on to study deeply under both Siggava and Caṇḍavajjī.
