제3차 결집을 주재한 장로로 파탈리풋타에서 태어났으며, 젊은 시절 승려 시가바가 여러 해에 걸친 조용한 인내 끝에 그를 승단으로 이끌었고, 이후 시가바와 찬다바지 두 사람 밑에서 깊이 수학했다.

The presiding elder of the Third Buddhist Council, born at Pāṭaliputta and won over to the Order as a youth by the monk Siggava after years of quiet perseverance, going on to study deeply under both Siggava and Caṇḍavajjī.
