A nephew of the sage Asita who, on his uncle’s advice, became an ascetic in readiness for the Buddha’s enlightenment, later questioning the Buddha on the practice of a true recluse before attaining Arahantship in seclusion.

A brahmin village in Magadha, also called Upatissa-gāma, the birthplace of Sāriputta, where he later returned to die after making his mother a Stream-winner.
