एक जातक कथा जिसमें जन्म से ही श्रद्धापूर्वक यज्ञ-अग्नि की देखभाल करने वाला एक ब्राह्मण, अपनी अनुपस्थिति में चोरों द्वारा उसकी छोड़ी गई भेंट-गाय खा जाने पर घृणावश उसे त्याग देता है, यह समझते हुए कि अग्निदेव अपनी ही भेंट की रक्षा तक नहीं कर सके, यह इस प्रश्न के संदर्भ में कही गई कि क्या तपस्वियों को कठिन तपस्या से पुण्य प्राप्त होता है।
