부처님과 동시대에 이단으로 여겨진 육사외도 중 한 명으로, 엄격한 신체 절제와 고행을 통한 악업 세척을 강조하는 고행 운동의 지도자였으며, 끊임없는 전지를 주장하고 고통은 과거 업의 결과가 다할 때에만 끝난다고 가르쳤다.
