본명은 마할리였으나 언청이 때문에 옷타따로 알려진 릿차위 사람으로, 사미 시하의 중재로 이루어진 부처님과의 대화가 『마할리 경』에 기록되어 있다.

A Licchavī whose personal name was Mahāli but who was known as Oṭṭhaddha for his hare-lip; his conversation with the Buddha, gained through the novice Sīha’s intervention, is recorded in the Mahāli Sutta.
