The twenty-ninth discourse of the Dīghanikāya, prompted by news of the death of the Jain leader Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta and the ensuing disputes among his followers, in which the Buddha explains why such discord was inevitable given that flawed teaching, then details the qualities of a truly perfect teacher and teaching, exemplified by the Tathāgata himself.
