The group of five ascetics — Aññāta-Koṇḍañña, Bhaddiya, Vappa, Mahānāma, and Assaji — who practised austerities alongside the Bodhisatta, left him when he abandoned that path, but became his first disciples after hearing his first discourse at Isipatana.
