보살(Bodhisatta)이 고행자 스승으로서, 네 마리 동물 벗들이 각기 집착이나 자만에서 비롯된 과거의 잘못을 고백하며 포살일을 지킨다는 자타카로, 포살일 준수를 장려하려 오백 명의 재가 신자에게 설해졌으며, 그 동물들은 후에 아누룻다(Anuruddha), 마하가섭(Mahā-Kassapa), 마하목갈라나(Mahā-Moggallāna), 사리불(Sāriputta)의 전생으로 밝혀졌다.

A Jātaka in which the Bodhisatta as an ascetic teacher and four animal companions each observe the fast day by confessing a past fault born of attachment or pride, told to five hundred lay disciples to encourage the keeping of fast days, with the animals later identified as former lives of Anuruddha, Mahā-Kassapa, Mahā-Moggallāna, and Sāriputta.
