一則本生故事，講菩薩為苦行導師，與四隻結伴而居的動物一同守持布薩戒日，各自懺悔因貪愛或我慢而犯的過失，此故事講給五百在家信眾以鼓勵持守布薩日，四獸後被指認分別是阿那律、大迦葉、大目犍連與舍利弗的前生。

A Jātaka in which the Bodhisatta as an ascetic teacher and four animal companions each observe the fast day by confessing a past fault born of attachment or pride, told to five hundred lay disciples to encourage the keeping of fast days, with the animals later identified as former lives of Anuruddha, Mahā-Kassapa, Mahā-Moggallāna, and Sāriputta.
