동료들과 함께 아라한과를 얻지 못한 유일한 비구로, 이를 만회하려 밤새 정진하다 넘어져 넓적다리가 부러졌고, 이 일로 부처님이 미루는 습관의 폐해를 설한 바루나 자타카를 말씀하셨다.
