หนึ่งในสี่พระนามที่ตั้งให้แก่พระวนวาสีติสสเถระ ได้ชื่อเช่นนี้เพราะเมื่อท่านมาถึงเมืองสาวัตถี ชาวเมืองแข่งกันถวายเกียรติด้วยบาตรพันใบและจีวรพันผืน ซึ่งท่านมอบให้แก่คณะสงฆ์ทั้งหมด อันเป็นผลจากการที่ท่านเคยถวายผ้าชิ้นหนึ่งแก่พระเถระในชาติก่อน

One of the four names given to the elder Vanavāsī Tissa, bestowed because when he came to Sāvatthi the citizens vied to honour him with a thousand alms bowls and a thousand robes, all of which he gave to the Order, a result of his having once given a piece of cloth to an elder in a former life.
