부처님이 출현한 후 효력을 잃은 주문을 배우려고 승단에 들어온 사왓티의 바라문으로, 아라한과를 얻어 천신들에게 사랑받는 비구들 가운데 으뜸으로 칭송받았으나, 누구에게나 습관적으로 천민이라 부르는 것으로 악명 높았다.
A brahmin of Sāvatthi who entered the Order to learn a spell that had ceased working after the Buddha’s appearance, attained Arahantship, and was declared foremost among monks beloved by devas, though notorious for habitually addressing everyone as an outcaste.
