경전에 능통한 비구로, 명상의 증득이 없어 부처님으로부터 ‘빈껍데기 포틸라(Poṭṭhila)’라는 별명을 얻었으나, 어린 사미 앞에서 자신을 낮추어 아라한과를 얻었다.
