ගෝතම බුදුරජාණන් වහන්සේගේ එකම පුත්‍රයා, ඔහුගේ පියා ගිහිගෙදර හැර ගිය දිනයේම උපත ලැබූ අතර, ළමා වියේදීම සාරිපුත්ත මහරහතන් වහන්සේ විසින් සාමණේර පැවිද්ද දෙනු ලැබූ අතර, කීකරු බව හා ඉගෙනීමට ඇති උනන්දුව නිසා ප්‍රසිද්ධ විය.
