스리랑카 상좌부의 담마루치카 분파에서 갈라져 나온 이단 종파로, 후에 마하세나 왕이 건립한 제타바나 정사에 정착했으며 창시자인 장로 사갈라의 이름을 따서 명명되었다고 한다

A heterodox sect that split off from the Dhammarucika branch of Theravāda in Sri Lanka and later settled at the Jetavana-vihāra built by King Mahāsena, said to be named after its founder, the elder Sāgala.
