ドゥッタガーマニ王の一人息子で、被差別民の娘と結婚するため王位を捨てた。前生に鍛冶屋であった時、豚肉入りの食事を八人の阿羅漢に施したことがある。彼の誕生日にスリランカ中に満ちた豊かな稲穂にちなんでその名が付いたと伝えられる。
