두따가마니 왕의 외아들로, 천민 소녀와 결혼하기 위해 왕위를 버렸다. 전생에 대장장이였을 때 여덟 아라한에게 돼지고기가 든 음식을 공양한 적이 있다. 그가 태어난 날 스리랑카 전역에 가득했던 풍성한 벼에서 이름이 유래했다고 전한다.
