A birth story of the Bodhisatta as a chaplain of Bārāṇasī who became an ascetic after drawing moral lessons from three chance observations, told in reference to a brahmin who was forever testing his own virtue.

ชาดกที่พระโพธิสัตว์ในฐานะปุโรหิตของกษัตริย์แห่งพาราณสี ทดสอบว่าความรู้หรือคุณธรรมนำมาซึ่งเกียรติยศมากกว่ากันโดยแสร้งทำเป็นขโมย และเมื่อพบว่าคุณธรรมได้รับการยกย่องมากกว่า จึงออกบวชเป็นนักพรตด้วยความยินยอมของกษัตริย์

A Jātaka in which the Bodhisatta, chaplain to the king of Bārāṇasī, tests whether learning or virtue brings greater honour by feigning theft, and, on discovering virtue to be more esteemed, becomes an ascetic with the king’s leave.
