戦闘の轟音と飛び道具に怯える戦象を励ます熟練の調教師についての本生譚で、戦場をわが家のように感じよと促すと象はあらゆる障害を突破して勝利を収めるという話であり、最初は約束された褒美のためだけに戒律を守っていたが、後にサーリプッタの言葉に心動かされて完全な悟りに至った仏陀の異母弟にちなんで説かれた。

A Jātaka about a skilled trainer who rallies a battle elephant terrified by the noise and missiles of combat, urging it to feel at home on the battlefield until it breaks through every obstacle to secure victory, told about the Buddha’s half-brother, who kept monastic discipline at first only for a promised reward but was later moved by Sāriputta’s words to attain full awakening.
