यह सुत्त बताता है कि परिव्राजक उग्गाहमान का दावा है कि सच में विजयी श्रमण वही है जो शरीर, वाणी या मन से कोई पाप नहीं करता और निर्दोष रूप से जीविका कमाता है, बुद्ध इस परिभाषा को यह बताकर खारिज करते हैं कि इससे तो एक असहाय शिशु भी श्रमण बन जाएगा, फिर वे सच्ची उपलब्धि को आर्य अष्टांगिक मार्ग की निपुणता के साथ पूर्ण ज्ञान और मुक्ति के रूप में वर्णित करते हैं।

A discourse in which the wanderer Uggāhamāna claims that a truly triumphant recluse is simply one who commits no evil in deed, speech, or thought and earns a living blamelessly, a definition the Buddha dismisses by noting it would make even a helpless infant a recluse, before describing genuine attainment as mastery of the Noble Eightfold Path together with full knowledge and deliverance.
