พระสูตรที่ปริพาชกชื่ออุคคาหมานะกล่าวอ้างว่าสมณะผู้พิชิตอย่างแท้จริงคือผู้ที่ไม่ทำชั่วทางกาย วาจา หรือใจ และเลี้ยงชีพโดยไม่มีที่ติเท่านั้น ซึ่งพระพุทธเจ้าทรงปฏิเสธคำนิยามนี้โดยชี้ว่าแม้แต่ทารกที่ช่วยตัวเองไม่ได้ก็จะกลายเป็นสมณะไปด้วย ก่อนจะทรงพรรณนาถึงความสำเร็จที่แท้จริงว่าคือความชำนาญในอริยมรรคมีองค์แปดพร้อมด้วยความรู้และความหลุดพ้นอันสมบูรณ์

A discourse in which the wanderer Uggāhamāna claims that a truly triumphant recluse is simply one who commits no evil in deed, speech, or thought and earns a living blamelessly, a definition the Buddha dismisses by noting it would make even a helpless infant a recluse, before describing genuine attainment as mastery of the Noble Eightfold Path together with full knowledge and deliverance.
