魚と鳥に海を飲み干さぬよう水を飲みすぎるなと警告する貪欲な水カラスを怖がらせて追い払うため恐ろしい姿をとる海神（菩薩）についてのジャータカで、そのカラスと同一視される釈迦族のウパナンダの大いなる貪欲に関連して語られた。

A Jātaka about a sea-spirit, the Bodhisatta, who assumes a terrifying shape to frighten off a greedy water-crow warning fish and birds not to drink too much lest they empty the sea — told with reference to the great greed of Upananda the Sakyan, identified with the crow.
