사냥하던 왕에게 상처를 입고도 달아난 사슴이 훗날 같은 왕을 구덩이에서 구해내고 법을 설하여 왕이 백성들에게 오계를 선포하게 했다는 본생담으로, 도리천에서 아비담마를 설한 뒤 부처가 던진 물음에 답하는 사리풋타의 뛰어난 지혜를 보이기 위해 설해졌다.

A birth-story about a stag, wounded but escaped from a hunting king, who later pulled the same king out of a pit and taught him the Dhamma, prompting the king to decree the five precepts for his subjects, told to illustrate Sāriputta’s extraordinary wisdom in answering questions the Buddha posed after teaching the Abhidhamma in Tāvatiṃsa.
