カーシの隊商指導者の息子で、十五歳のとき両親が折れるまで断食し、ダーサカ長老のもとで出家した。のちに阿羅漢となり千人の比丘を率い、シッガヴァとチャンダヴァッジーが彼の静かな禅定の様子を目撃した後、二人を出家させた

The son of a caravan leader of Kāsi who, at fifteen, entered the Order under Dāsaka Thera after fasting until his parents relented, became an Arahant leading a thousand monks, and later ordained Siggava and Caṇḍavajjī after they observed his silent meditative trance.
