サーヴァッティの極貧の女性の息子で、母が出産時に死んだため墓地で生まれ、墓守に育てられた。七歳のときに仏陀に出会い、慈悲の瞑想を課題として与えられ、まもなく阿羅漢果を得た。

The son of a very poor woman of Sāvatthi, born in a cemetery after his mother died in childbirth and raised by a watchman; he met the Buddha at age seven and, given loving-kindness as his meditation subject, soon attained Arahantship.

同じ愛称で呼ばれた別の子供で、叔父によって墓地の死体に縛りつけられ、ジャッカルに食わせようとされた。仏陀の力がその縄を解き彼を悟りに導き、その後、嘆き悲しんでいた母も預流果を得た。

A child, also known by the same nickname, whose uncle bound him to a corpse in a charnel field to be devoured by jackals; the Buddha’s power broke his bonds and brought him to enlightenment, after which his grieving mother also became a Stream-winner.
