사왓티의 매우 가난한 여인의 아들로, 어머니가 출산 중 사망한 뒤 묘지에서 태어나 묘지기의 손에 자랐다. 일곱 살에 부처님을 만나 자애 명상을 수행 주제로 받고 곧 아라한과를 증득하였다.

The son of a very poor woman of Sāvatthi, born in a cemetery after his mother died in childbirth and raised by a watchman; he met the Buddha at age seven and, given loving-kindness as his meditation subject, soon attained Arahantship.

같은 별명으로 불린 또 다른 아이로, 숙부가 그를 화장터의 시체에 묶어 자칼에게 먹히게 하려 했다. 부처님의 위신력이 그 결박을 풀어 그를 깨달음으로 이끌었고, 이후 슬퍼하던 그의 어머니도 수다원과를 얻었다.

A child, also known by the same nickname, whose uncle bound him to a corpse in a charnel field to be devoured by jackals; the Buddha’s power broke his bonds and brought him to enlightenment, after which his grieving mother also became a Stream-winner.
