यह जातक कथा एक मछुआरे के बारे में है जिसकी यह चाल कि पड़ोसी काल्पनिक मछली में हिस्सा न माँग सकें, उलटी पड़ जाती है — वह अटकी लकड़ी से जूझते हुए अंधा हो जाता है, कपड़े चुरा लिए जाते हैं, और जिस झगड़े को उसने पत्नी से शुरू करवाया उसके लिए उसे दंड और पिटाई झेलनी पड़ती है; एक वृक्ष-देवता यह देखता है; यह कथा देवदत्त के विषय में कही गई कि उसकी हर चाल विनाश में समाप्त होती है।

A Jātaka about a fisherman whose scheme to keep neighbours from claiming a share of an imagined catch backfires disastrously — he is blinded wrestling with a mere snag, robbed of his clothes, and his wife is fined and beaten for a quarrel he had instructed her to start — witnessed by a tree-spirit, told about Devadatta as an example of every scheme of his ending in ruin.
