수행자 공동체의 우물을 습관적으로 더럽히는 자칼에 관한 자타카로, 잡히자 그저 자기 종족의 습성을 따랐을 뿐이라고 해명한다는 이야기이며, 부처님 시대에 이시파타나에서 같은 일이 벌어진 뒤에 설해졌다.
