仏陀の最も卓越した弟子の一人で、カピラヴァットゥ出身の理髪師であった。サキヤ族の王子たちとともに僧団に加わり、彼らの求めに応じてその高慢を挫くため彼らより先に得度した。後に仏陀から律の全体を学び、戒律の熟達において第一と称えられた。

One of the Buddha’s most eminent disciples, a barber from Kapilavatthu who accompanied the Sakyan princes into the Order and, at their request, was ordained before them so as to humble their pride, later learning the entire Vinaya from the Buddha and being declared foremost in mastery of monastic discipline.

A boy of Rājagaha whose over-indulgent parents had him ordained along with sixteen equally young companions, an episode whose youthful antics led to the rule against granting higher ordination to anyone under twenty.

注釈書で「バーギネイヤ・ウパーリ」として特に区別される僧で、自身を得度させた高名な弟子の甥にあたる。過去仏を偈で讃えた結果、天界で十八回、人間界で二十五回王となったことで記憶されている。
