부처님의 가장 뛰어난 제자 중 한 명으로, 까삘라왓투 출신의 이발사였다. 사꺄족 왕자들과 함께 승가에 들어갔으며, 그들의 요청에 따라 그들의 교만을 꺾기 위해 그들보다 먼저 득도하였다. 훗날 부처님에게서 율장 전체를 배워 계율 숙달에서 제일로 일컬어졌다.

주석서에서 “바기네이야 우빨리”로 특별히 구분되는 승려로, 자신을 득도시킨 저명한 제자의 조카이다. 과거불을 게송으로 찬탄한 결과 천상에서 열여덟 번, 인간계에서 스물다섯 번 왕이 되었던 것으로 기억된다.

A monk distinguished in the commentaries as Bhāgineyya Upāli, a nephew of the eminent disciple who ordained him, remembered for having been eighteen times a king among the gods and twenty-five times a king among men as a result of praising a past Buddha in verse.

날란다의 장자로, “우빨리 가하빠띠”로 구분된다. 원래 니간타 나타뿟따의 신봉자였으나 『우빨리 숫따』에 기록된 부처님과의 논쟁 이후 예류과를 얻어 귀의하였다.
