A brahmin village near Rājagaha, birthplace of Sāriputta, whose original name Nālaka was replaced by Upatissagāma because its chieftains, likely including Sāriputta’s own father, belonged to the Upatissa clan.

The settlement founded on the Gambhīra river by Vijaya’s chaplain Upatissa, seat of government before Anurādhapura, from which five hundred young men joined the Order soon after Mahinda’s arrival.
