王舎城近郊のバラモン村で、舎利弗の生誕地である。もとの名はナーラカといったが、村の首長たち—おそらく舎利弗自身の父も含む—がウパティッサ氏族に属していたため、ウパティッサガーマと改称された。

A brahmin village near Rājagaha, birthplace of Sāriputta, whose original name Nālaka was replaced by Upatissagāma because its chieftains, likely including Sāriputta’s own father, belonged to the Upatissa clan.
