왕사성 근처의 바라문 마을로 사리불의 출생지이다. 원래 이름은 날라카였으나, 마을의 족장들—아마도 사리불 자신의 아버지를 포함하여—이 우파팃사 씨족에 속했기 때문에 우파팃사가마로 바뀌었다.

A brahmin village near Rājagaha, birthplace of Sāriputta, whose original name Nālaka was replaced by Upatissagāma because its chieftains, likely including Sāriputta’s own father, belonged to the Upatissa clan.

위자야 왕의 제관 우파팃사가 감비라 강변에 세운 정착지로, 아누라다푸라 이전의 통치 중심지였으며, 마힌다 도착 직후 이곳에서 청년 오백 명이 출가하였다.
