우루벨라에 살던 세 형제 고행자 테바티카 자틸라 중 맏이로, 오백 명의 제자를 이끌었으나 부처님이 그의 불을 숭배하는 뱀을 제압하고 수많은 기적을 보인 뒤 부처님의 가르침에 귀의했다.

The eldest of the three Tebhātika-Jaṭilā ascetic brothers living at Uruvelā, who led five hundred disciples and was converted to the Buddha’s teaching after the Buddha overcame his fire-worshipping serpent and performed numerous miracles.
